“Exposure” is an experimental documentary that explores issues of race, sexuality and cultural identity. A dialogue between two lesbians of colour (Japanese-Canadian and Afro-Caribbean women) is intercut with photographs, texts, paintings and voice-over. 

Michelle Mohabeer:

Dr. Michelle Mohabeer is a Caribbean-Canadian award-winning filmmaker/media artist, academic-lecturer, and writer. She was recognized as “best female filmmaker 2020” by the Berlin Underground Film Festival for her second creative feature documentary, Queer Coolie-tudes (2019), which was awarded Direction Excellence from Docs Without Borders (US) and received the “Intersect Award” from the 15th Caribbean Tales International Film Festival. Queer Coolie-tudes had its Canadian premiere at the 29th Inside Out Film Festival, was selected for the media library collection of the 50th Visions du Reel (Switzerland) and had its European theatrical premiere at the International Queer and Migrant Film Festival (Amsterdam). Prior films include the feature essay documentary Blu In You (2008), Inside Out commissioned short, Echoes (2003), Making Scenes Ottawa, commissioned Tracing Soul (2000), experimental narrative Child-Play (1996), experimental queer short, Two/Doh (1996), hybrid documentary Coconut/Cane & Cutlass (1994), and EXPOSURE (1990), commissioned by the National Film Board of Canada (former-studio D women’s unit), Five Feminist Minutes collection.

Mohabeer’s films have exhibited worldwide at over 300 festivals, conferences, and galleries, and collected by over 60 University libraries across the US, Canada, and at the University of West Indies- Barbados. Her films have been profiled in Film Fatales: Independent Women Directors, The Romance of Transgression in Canada, North of Everything, The Bent Lens, Queering Canada: A Collection of Essays. Scholarly articles; “Putting the Cool in Coolie: Disidentification, Desire and Dissent in the work of filmmaker, Michelle Mohabeer” in The Caribbean Review of Gender Studies and “Coconut/Cane & Cutlass: Queer Visuality in the Indo-Caribbean Lesbian Archive” in the Middle Atlantic Review of Latin American Studies.

Dr. Mohabeer teaches at York University and she is contributing editor of the critical anthology, Reframing the Nation: Racialized, Indigenous & Queer BIWOC Canadian Independent Women Filmmakers 1980-2020.
